Webcam Basics If You Decide to Turn Your Camera On
Short answer: You never have to. If you do, control the background, the lighting and what the camera can see, and know how to switch it off quickly.
Most viewers never turn their camera on, and that is fine. For those who want to, a few basics keep you comfortable.
Check your background
Look behind you before you start. Remove mail, photos, ID, work items and anything that shows where you live.
Lighting
Face a window or a lamp rather than sitting with a light behind you. Soft light looks better and hides less.
Know the controls
Find the camera and microphone buttons before you go live so you can switch them off at once.
Protect yourself
Never share your full name, address, workplace or financial details. Remember that anything on screen can be recorded by others, so only do what you are comfortable seeing again.
You can change your mind
Turning the camera off mid-session is always allowed. Leave any room where you feel pressured.
